Springfield Motorsport, Virginia’s #1 Mustang performance shop, provides the Mustang enthusiast market with the highest quality performance and appearance enhancements available in Northern Virginia, the Washington DC Metropolitan Area and the Mid-Atlantic Region.

History

Springfield Motorsport (SMS), a premier Ford Mustang specialty shop for speed, performance and appearance, was opened in July 1994 in recognition of the need in Northern Virginia for specialty shop devoted to the icon of the muscle car market, the Mustang.  This focus combined with a passion for speed and never-ending quest for greater and more efficient performance has made Springfield Motorsport one of the leading Mustang shops in the country. Springfield Motorsport has had its cars featured on the covers of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine. 

It was this reputation in the performance marketplace that attracted the new owners, the Robinsons, to SMS. As a family infused with the enthusiasm for and exhilaration of high performance cars, they knew this was the opportunity they had been seeking. Completing the purchase in October 2006, they have been working hard to put a new face on SMS and reinvigorate its place in the Mustang market. Having been a car enthusiast since a young boy, Rick Robinson had always aspired to be involved in the automotive performance and racing industry. To prepare for this, he entered college seeking a degree in mechanical engineering and was selected by Ford Motor Company as a student engineer in their cooperative education program. However, his career with Ford was cut short by a fateful call from the Selective Service resulting in a 20 year career flying jet fighters in the US Navy. Not a bad choice as an alternate career.

Since leaving the service, he had been working as a business management consultant in the DC area while building relationships in the automotive performance and car enthusiast industry. As his son Alex and daughter Tiffany completed their educations, Rick could finally begin his own collection of performance cars while watching for the opportunity to finally establish the automotive performance business he had dreamed of for many years. As a member of the Mustang Club of America, the National Capital Region Mustang Club and Northern Virginia Mustang Club and seated on the Board of Directors of the Roush Owners and Enthusiasts Association (formed around the Roush Mustang market), Rick knew that the Mustang market was the place to be. As the general manager of SMS, he now guides its management, marketing and strategic development.

Ellen Robinson, now office manager for SMS, was introduced to high performance cars by her cousins who cruised the “streets of San Francisco” where she spent her teens. Her love for cool, fast cars came out as inspiration for helping son, Alex, achieve the recognition for coolest car in school in his high school senior yearbook. She continues to inspire new directions for SMS while making sure the finances are ready to help us achieve those goals.

Alex of course had been born with these genes and his love of cars was inevitable. He started as most young men do these days in a small ‘four banger’, but one with some spirit – a ’95 Eagle Talon Turbo. After a close encounter with an embankment on one of Virginia’s twisty back roads, it began a transformation into this fully custom beauty with 12 coats of House of Colors candy apple red paint. He is now working as our Service Manager directly serving our customers at the front desk.

Daughter Tiffany, while currently focused on completing her degree at George Mason University, helps with the family business in any way she can.

 

Located just outside the ‘Beltway’ in an industrial park in Lorton, Virginia, a suburb of Metropolitan Washington DC, with easy access from its main traffic corridor, Interstate 95, Springfield Motorsport is uniquely positioned to serve the Mustang enthusiasts of the entire metropolitan area and beyond. Since its opening, SMS has grown from one mechanic in a single bay shop of less than 1500 square feet to its current 6000 square foot, 6 bay facility with fully certified paint booth, suspension installation and alignment rack and a Dynojet dynamometer for safely squeezing out all the horsepower available from our customers ponies. As it has grown and honed its position in the Mustang high performance after-market sector, SMS has also incorporated a solid general repair business to accommodate the changing needs of loyal customers.  As the speed loving teenagers of yesterday become spouses, homeowners, and parents, where the need for speed is replaced by the need for both performance and solid and safe transportation, SMS feels an obligation towards these customers to meet their changing needs.  We also know that in the future when the children are grown and the house is paid for, these customers will once again be seeking the high performance they craved in their youth.  After more than a decade in business, SMS has already experienced this with several customers who have come back full-circle to their passions for speed and performance, just as we did.
